HALIFAX: The Nova Scotia government has implemented a province-wide outdoor burn ban due to prevailing dry weather and high temperatures. The ban will remain in effect until October 15, when the wildfire season officially ends, or until weather conditions significantly improve, announced Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources.
Minister Rushton stated that the province continues to experience low rainfall and arid conditions, with weather forecasts indicating no immediate relief from the dry spell. The recent heat has already led to several small and large fires across the province this month. Rushton emphasized the devastating wildfires of 2023, which caused extensive damage throughout the province, and expressed the government’s strong desire to prevent a recurrence, urging provincial residents to cooperate with the measure.
The provincial government clarified that the ban applies to all open-air burning activities, including campfires, bonfires, brush fires, and fires in outdoor chimneys. However, charcoal and gas barbecues, as well as gas stoves, may still be used, provided all safety guidelines are strictly followed. Violations of the burn ban will incur a hefty fine of $25,000.
