No swimming at 5 Metro Vancouver beaches due to E. coli

Vancouver: Five local swimming spots have advisories from Vancouver Coastal Health in place due to high E. coli counts. As of thursday, Dundarave Beach in West Vancouver, Sunset Beach, Third Beach and Trout Lake in Vancouver, and Lions Bay are not suitable for swimming.Signboards advising visitors not to swim have been erected at these beaches. A swimming ban is implemented when the E. coli bacteria count exceeds 400 per 100 milliliters of water sample.

Meanwhile, the health authority states that visitors can still swim at English Bay, Kitsilano Beach, Ambleside Beach, Second Beach, Sandy Cove, Sandy Beach, and Eagle Harbour in Metro Vancouver.

E. coli is a type of Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. It is present not only in human intestines but also in the intestines and feces of many animals, as well as in contaminated water. If ingested, this bacterium can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and dehydration, and in some cases, it can even be fatal.
