Newfoundland town declares state of emergency, closes businesses as water runs out

ST. JOHN’S: A state of emergency has been declared in the town of Conception Bay South (CBS), Newfoundland, following a severe water shortage. Mayor Darrin Bent announced that the town, home to approximately 27,000 people, had completely run out of drinking water by Tuesday evening.

The reason for the supply disruption is a malfunction in the water distribution system. Following the declaration, authorities have issued a directive to not use water for non-essential purposes. All business establishments have also been asked to shut down, and schools that were scheduled to open on Wednesday have been closed.

To provide a temporary water supply, water tankers have been arranged from neighboring towns with the assistance of the fire department. The leak occurred in a pipeline that is approximately fifty years old.

CBS has faced multiple states of emergency and evacuation warnings in recent months due to wildfires. The new water shortage has once again caused hardship for the residents. Authorities have stated that it will take more time to repair the damaged pipeline.
