New poll finds Conservative support slightly ahead of Liberals for first time in months

Ottawa: A new survey report indicates that for the first time since the federal election, the Conservative Party has surpassed the Liberals in public support. According to the Abacus survey, if an election were held today, 41% of people would vote for the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative Party. This marks a one-point increase from the previous month. At the same time, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has seen a four-point decrease in public support, now at 39 percent. The survey also found that Mark Carney’s popularity has increased since Pierre Poilievre’s by-election victory in Alberta last week, with Carney’s support rising by 18 points compared to the last survey.

Abacus CEO David Coletto suggests that this shift in public opinion is related to the fact that people no longer see US President Donald Trump and his tariff threats as their primary concern. The survey found that 60% of Canadians consider the rising cost of living to be their main worry. While Trump’s tariff threats remain a significant concern for over a third of Canadians (38%), the economy (36%), housing costs (35%), and healthcare (33%) are the other key issues highlighted by those who participated in the survey.
