New measles cases lead to exposure warning at Halifax Infirmary

HALIFAX: Nova Scotia Health Authority has warned that visitors to the Halifax QEII Health Centre may have been exposed to measles. The health agency announced that a person with a confirmed case of measles was present at the QEII Health Centre from September 7 to September 8, raising the number of cases in the province to 61.

The health agency warns that anyone who was in the following areas of the health centre during the specified times may have been exposed to measles:

QEII Emergency Department: Sunday, September 7, from 10:45 PM to 1:20 AM

QEII Diagnostic Imaging: Monday, September 8, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

The health authority has advised pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and children under 12 who were at the health centre during the above times to check for measles symptoms. Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious health problems or even death. It spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The primary symptoms include a fever, cough, runny nose, and severe fever. A red rash appears in the mouth and throat two or three days after the symptoms begin. If measles becomes more severe, it can lead to pneumonia, ear infections, blindness, and deafness.
