KATHMANDU: Widespread protests have erupted across Nepal after the government banned social media platforms, citing national security. The unrest has resulted in nine deaths and left approximately 100 people injured. Hundreds of thousands of young people have taken to the streets, paralyzing daily life in major cities, including Kathmandu.
Protesters claim the social media ban is a tactic to suppress public dissent and conceal government corruption and mismanagement. Demonstrations have been met with force, including lathi charges and gunfire, which led to the tragic casualties.
In response to the escalating violence, the Nepali government has called an emergency meeting. The administration is reportedly considering deploying the army to control the protests and has already stationed troops in key urban centers. As the situation remains volatile, protesters attempted to enter the parliament building, and the movement that began in Kathmandu is now spreading to more cities across the country.
