Most Edmontonians think police doing good job overall

EDMONTON: A recent survey indicates strong public support for the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and its new Chief, Warren Drechsel, for the service’s improved performance within the city. The findings, released following a CityNews poll, show high approval ratings for both the leadership and front-line officers, even as significant concerns persist regarding public safety and police response times.

Support for Chief and Front-Line Officers

The poll highlighted high levels of confidence among Edmonton residents:

  • 86% of participants expressed support for new Chief Warren Drechsel.
  • 78% believe that front-line police officers are performing their duties effectively.

Persistent Public Safety Concerns

Despite the general satisfaction with the police service’s performance, city residents voiced considerable anxiety about public safety, particularly in public spaces.

  • 73% of respondents reported fearing they might become a victim of violence while using public transit systems.

Citizens also identified the top issues they believe the police should prioritize:

  • Drug use (41%)
  • Homicides (35%)
  • Gang attacks (32%)

Operational and Justice System Issues

Concerns were also raised regarding the police’s operational efficiency and the broader justice system’s approach to offenders.

  • 72% of respondents expressed doubt or concern about the time it would take for police to arrive when assistance is requested.
  • A vast majority (89%) demanded a stricter stance on criminals released on bail, believing the release of violent offenders on bail is too frequent.

Budget and Enforcement Views

When it comes to funding and enforcement methods, residents offered mixed views:

  • 49% of people suggested that the current funding should be maintained while focusing on increasing efficiency.
  • 43% called for an increase in the EPS budget.
  • 61% of city residents support the installation of more photo radar cameras.

EPS Response

The Edmonton Police Service stated that it would focus increased attention on identified problem areas and public transportation. EPS affirmed its commitment to addressing the public’s concerns regarding safety and response times.
