Mississauga staff push for citywide ban on consumer fireworks after surge in complaints

MISSISSAUGA: Mississauga City is moving toward implementing a complete ban on fireworks across the municipality to control safety hazards and mitigate air and noise pollution.

A report has been submitted to the City Council General Committee recommending a full prohibition on the use, sale, display, purchase, distribution, and possession of fireworks throughout the city. This proposal follows several months of public consultation and feedback.

Currently, Mississauga allows the use of fireworks without a permit only on five designated holidays: Lunar New Year, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve. City officials stated that the decision to pursue a ban was driven by an increase in fireworks-related complaints received during these allowed holiday periods.

If the City Council approves the measure, the total ban is expected to come into effect after Canada Day in 2026.Public feedback on the issue was mixed but leaned toward stricter control. A city-wide survey conducted earlier this year saw participation from over 3,000 residents. Of those, 1,464 people supported a complete ban, while 1,317 favoured maintaining the current regulations that permit fireworks on the five holidays. Notably, nearly half of all survey participants suggested that fireworks should only be allowed on Canada Day.
