Mikaël Kingsbury Secures Silver in Dramatic Tiebreaker at Milano Cortina 2026

Milan Cortina- Canadian freestyle skiing legend Mikaël Kingsbury captured the silver medal in the men's moguls at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on Thursday, adding a historic fourth Olympic medal to his storied career. The 33-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, delivered a masterful performance at the Livigno Snow Park, though the quest for gold ended in one of the closest finishes in Olympic history.

The final concluded with an extraordinary tie between Kingsbury and Australia’s Cooper Woods, as both athletes posted an identical total score of 83.71. Under Olympic tie-breaking rules, the gold medal was awarded to Woods based on a superior "turns" score (48.4 to Kingsbury's 47.7). Japan’s Ikuma Horishima, a longtime rival of the Canadian star, secured the bronze medal with a score of 83.44.

With this result, Kingsbury becomes the first freestyle skier in history to win four Olympic medals in the same individual event, having previously won gold in PyeongChang (2018) and silvers in Sochi (2014) and Beijing (2022). Despite battling a groin injury earlier in the season, Kingsbury proved his resilience on the world stage. Canada's Julien Viel also delivered a strong performance, finishing in sixth place with a score of 79.78.

Following the competition, Kingsbury confirmed that Milano Cortina 2026 would be his final Olympic Games. However, he has one last chance to reach the podium in the men's dual moguls event, which is scheduled to take place on February 15.
