Mercedes-Benz Recalls EQB Models in Canada Over Fire Risks

Ottawa: Transport Canada has issued a safety recall for several hundred Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles across the country due to a persistent fire hazard. The recall specifically targets the 2022 and 2023 EQB-Class models, affecting approximately 837 units. According to the federal agency, a defect within the high-voltage battery modules can cause them to overheat or short-circuit, creating a significant risk of fire even when the vehicle is turned off and parked.

The agency noted that many of these vehicles had been recalled previously for similar issues; however, the previous repairs were found to be insufficient, necessitating this secondary action. To mitigate immediate danger, Mercedes-Benz has advised owners to limit their vehicle’s maximum charge to 80% and to park their cars outdoors, away from structures and other vehicles, until the necessary repairs are completed.

Mercedes-Benz will be contacting affected owners via mail to coordinate the replacement of the high-voltage battery modules at authorized dealerships. This measure is intended to ensure the long-term safety of the vehicles and to prevent any potential incidents resulting from the identified battery malfunction.
