Measles Outbreak Sparks Health Alert in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — Manitoba health officials have issued an urgent public warning following a spike in measles cases across the city. Authorities have identified several high-risk locations where the public may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus between March 16 and March 17, 2026.

The confirmed exposure sites include J.H. Bruns Collegiate, Granco Dental, Prairie Endodontics, and the Winnipeg Orofacial Health Centre. Additionally, the health alert extends to the Shoppers Drug Mart at Dominion Centre, the St. Vital Family Medical Clinic, and the emergency department of the Winkler Boundary Trails Health Centre. Anyone who visited these locations during the specified dates is being urged to monitor themselves closely for symptoms.

Health officials are strongly advising residents to verify their vaccination records, specifically for the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) or the MMR-Varicella (MMRV) vaccines. Individuals who are unvaccinated and were present at the exposure sites are instructed to seek vaccination immediately and limit contact with others to prevent further spread.

The symptoms of measles typically appear between seven to 21 days after exposure. Early signs include fever, a runny nose, and red, watery eyes. These are often followed by the appearance of small white spots inside the mouth or throat. A distinct red blotchy rash usually begins on the face and spreads downward to the rest of the body a few days after the initial symptoms surface.
