Massive Fire Destroys Historic Buildings in Downtown New Glasgow; 14 Displaced

HALIFAX: A devastating fire broke out in the historic downtown area of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the total loss of three adjoining buildings. The blaze, which was reported around 3:00 PM on Provost Street, sent thick plumes of smoke across the town, forcing emergency crews to close several main arteries, including the section between MacLean and Jury streets.

According to local authorities, the fire destroyed structures that were over a century old, housing prominent local businesses such as Zelda’s Flowers, Proud Pets, and Twagy Vintage, along with residential apartments on the upper floors. While the structural damage is extensive, New Glasgow Regional Police confirmed that there were no fatalities or serious injuries reported. However, the disaster has displaced 14 residents who are now receiving support from community agencies and the Red Cross.

Mayor Nancy Dicks described the event as a “heartbreaking loss” for the community, noting that the destroyed buildings were staples of the downtown core. Firefighters from New Glasgow and surrounding areas battled the flames late into the night, and an excavator was eventually brought in to dismantle the unstable remains of the structures to prevent further safety risks.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New Glasgow Fire Department and the fire marshal. Provost Street remained closed through Thursday morning as investigators combed through the debris. Officials are expected to provide a detailed update on the incident and potential recovery efforts later this evening.
