Halifax: Long-term care home workers across Nova Scotia are preparing to go on strike, citing demands including substantial wage increases. The union representing the workers states that employees in Nova Scotia are currently the lowest paid in Atlantic Canada.
In a show of solidarity and frustration, workers organized a rally on Wednesday near Premier Tim Houston’s office in Westville.
The collective agreement between the long-term care home employees and the provincial government expired in 2023. Since then, negotiations have been underway with units representing workers at 52 long-term care facilities. A union spokesperson revealed that workers are frustrated by the prolonged period without a contract, noting that two units have already voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action. This development suggests that potential labor disruptions across the province’s long-term care sector could be imminent.
