MISTISSINI, QUEBEC – The Cree Nation of Mistissini in northern Quebec remains under a strict lockdown following a fatal shooting that occurred late Wednesday night. Chief Michael Petawabano confirmed that the incident resulted in multiple fatalities, describing the situation as a grave tragedy for the close-knit community. In a statement released early Thursday, the Chief urged all residents to remain indoors, lock their doors, and cooperate fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
The shooting took place around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday on Riverside Street. According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), two men in their 30s were found with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. They were rushed to a local dispensary but were unfortunately pronounced dead. While initial reports late Wednesday warned of an “active shooter,” provincial police later clarified that they do not believe a suspect is currently wandering the community. Instead, investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting was a targeted “settling of scores” potentially linked to organized crime or drug trafficking.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, all public buildings, including schools and administrative offices, have been closed until further notice. Travel into and out of the community, which is located about 800 kilometers north of Montreal, is currently restricted. The Eeyou Eenou Police Force (EEPF) and the Sûreté du Québec are conducting a joint investigation to identify the suspects, as no arrests have been made so far. Chief Petawabano expressed deep grief for the families affected, stating that the community’s safety remains the highest priority until authorities confirm it is safe to lift the confinement.
