Charlottetown: A major fire has broken out at the Gulf Island Peat Moss company located in Foxley River, Prince Edward Island. The Tyne Valley Fire Department is currently engaged in an intensive operation to contain the blaze. According to Fire Chief William Bishop, the fire has spread across an area measuring approximately 100 meters in length and width.
The situation is particularly concerning as the same area experienced a similar fire in the summer of 2024, which smoldered for nearly three weeks before being fully extinguished. Peat fires are notoriously difficult to manage because they can burn deep underground, often resurfacing even after the surface flames appear to be gone.
