OTTAWA: An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with a racially motivated attack against an Indian couple in a parking lot in Peterborough, Ontario. The incident, which was caught on video and widely shared on social media, occurred on July 29th.
The altercation reportedly began when the couple confronted a group of three young men after they allegedly damaged the couple’s car. The video shows the men hurling profanities, racial slurs, and death threats at the couple, with one of the men threatening to get out of his truck and ‘kill’ the husband.
Peterborough Police confirmed the arrest of one of the individuals, an 18-year-old from the City of Kawartha Lakes, on a charge of uttering threats. While Canadian law does not have a specific ‘hate crime’ charge that applies in this case, the police stated that they will inform the court that the incident was racially motivated. This will allow the court to consider the hateful nature of the attack during sentencing.
