TORONTO: IKEA Canada has announced plans to close its store located at Scarborough Town Centre (STC). The closure is anticipated to take place in early 2026, though the furniture retailer confirmed the store will remain open to the public until a final closing date is determined. The decision to shutter the location comes after lower-than-expected performance, primarily attributed to a shift in consumer behavior toward online shopping.
“We are constantly renewing and improving our business in order to remain relevant in an ever-changing retail world and to secure our future as a leading omnichannel retailer for generations to come,” said Selwyn Crittenden, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Canada.
The STC location was launched as a “City-Centre Store”—a new, smaller format—just two years ago. IKEA has been experimenting with smaller store formats in several markets globally. The retailer also opened a City-Centre Store in downtown Toronto in 2022, which is expected to remain open. The limited range of products that could be offered within the smaller STC footprint, combined with the rising preference for e-commerce, led to the performance shortfall.
Customers in the area will still be able to shop at the nearest full-size IKEA location in North York and through the company’s various online and delivery services.
