Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flood Risk Across Southern Ontario

TORONTO – Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a widespread weather alert for Southern Ontario, warning of heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions. The storm system is expected to move into the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) late Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday, bringing a significant volume of water to a region where the ground remains partially saturated or frozen.

Meteorologists forecast rainfall totals between 20 and 40 mm for major urban centers, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, and the Durham Region. While the GTA faces heavy rain, regions further east toward Ottawa are bracing for a more dangerous mix of precipitation, with 20 to 30 mm of freezing rain predicted. This combination of moisture and freezing temperatures is expected to create slick road surfaces and increase the weight on power lines and tree branches.

Local authorities have warned that the heavy downpour could result in immediate environmental hazards, particularly flash flooding and water pooling on major roadways. Residents in low-lying areas are being urged to clear storm drains and prepare for potential basement flooding. Additionally, water levels in rivers, creeks, and lakes are expected to rise rapidly; officials are advising the public to exercise extreme caution and keep children and pets away from the banks of fast-moving watercourses.
