Heat warning lifted in Waterloo, but fire ban remains in effect

KITCHENER: Environment Canada has officially lifted the heat warning for the Waterloo region. The warning, which was issued on August 8th, lasted throughout the weekend. During this period, temperatures soared above 30 degrees Celsius, but felt as high as 40 degrees Celsius due to humidity. According to the agency, this is higher than the average over the last 30 years. Last year, temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius on only two days in July, whereas this year, the number rose to 10 days in July.

Despite the heat warning being withdrawn, Environment Canada has announced that a temporary fire ban for the region will remain in place. The fire ban, which was declared on August 8th, prohibits open-air burning and backyard fires in Kitchener and Cambridge after 4 p.m. Such activities are already banned in Waterloo. Violators of this rule will face fines and other legal action.
