Halifax Imposes Overnight Winter Parking Ban as Heavy Snowfall Approaches

HALIFAX — The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) has announced the activation of its overnight winter parking ban for Zone 1 (Central) and Zone 2 (Non-Central), effective Monday from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM. The decision comes in response to weather forecasts predicting significant snowfall across the region from Sunday through Tuesday, necessitating clear roads for snow removal and salting operations.

According to a press release from the HRM, parking on municipal streets during these restricted hours is strictly prohibited. Vehicles found obstructing snow-clearing equipment or blocking sidewalks will be subject to fines and may be towed. Officials emphasized that under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, authorities have the power to remove any vehicle hindering winter maintenance efforts at any time of the year if it poses a challenge to public safety or infrastructure maintenance.

The municipality also issued a reminder regarding local bylaws: moving snow from private property onto public roads or sidewalks is an enforceable violation. To prevent damage to property and equipment, residents are urged to remove flower pots, lawn ornaments, and other decorative items from areas adjacent to sidewalks. For permanent fixtures that cannot be moved, the HRM recommends installing reflectors so they remain visible to snowplow operators under heavy snow cover.

The winter parking ban regulations are slated to remain in effect until March 31, 2026. Residents can determine which zone their address falls into by using the interactive tool on the municipality’s official website. To stay updated on activation alerts, citizens are encouraged to sign up for the real-time notification system.
