Freezing Rain and -50°C Extremes: Severe Winter Storm Batters Canada

OTTAWA: Following the Christmas holidays, weather conditions across Canada have taken a dangerous turn. Environment Canada has issued urgent warnings as a massive winter storm system brings a combination of heavy freezing rain to Ontario and Quebec, and life-threatening extreme cold to the Prairie provinces.

The “Deep Freeze” in the North and Prairies

In Northern Canada and the Yukon, temperatures are plummeting at an alarming rate. Meteorologists warn that with the wind chill factor, temperatures could feel as low as -50°C to -55°C. Such extreme conditions can cause frostbite on exposed skin within minutes, prompting health authorities to advise residents to stay indoors.

Ice Storm Warnings for Ontario and Quebec

A powerful low-pressure system developing over the Great Lakes is triggering significant freezing rain across Ontario.

  • Impact Areas: Regions north of Toronto, including Newmarket and Aurora, are expected to see up to 10 mm of ice accumulation.
  • Quebec & Montreal: Freezing rain is forecasted to begin Sunday night, leading authorities to urge the cancellation of all non-essential travel.
  • Risks: The heavy ice buildup poses a severe risk of downed power lines, widespread electricity outages, and treacherous road conditions.

Blizzards in Atlantic Canada

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the situation is equally critical with heavy snowfall and hurricane-force wind gusts reaching up to 110 km/h. Forecasters expect up to 60 cm of snow in some areas, which is likely to cause major delays or cancellations for flight services.

Safety and Travel Advisory

The Disaster Management Team has issued the following guidelines for citizens:

  • Drive with Caution: Driving on ice-covered roads is extremely hazardous; travelers are advised to check local alerts before heading out.
  • Emergency Kits: Households should be stocked with emergency lights, non-perishable food, and essential supplies.
  • Monitor Flights: Passengers are encouraged to check their flight status frequently as the storm disrupts air travel across the country.
