Yellowknife – The Government of the Northwest Territories has announced that the wildfire burning in the Fort Providence community remains out of control. Fort Providence leadership has stated that a resettlement plan is being implemented for the 700 residents who were evacuated from the community due to the fire.
Authorities confirmed that no homes have been lost in the blaze, which was first discovered on August 31. This made Fort Providence the second major community in the Northwest Territories to be evacuated in August.
Meanwhile, approximately 600 residents of Whatì, who were also forced to evacuate due to a wildfire, were permitted to return to their homes on Friday, a week after their displacement. Environment Canada had previously reported that air pollution had worsened in most parts of the Northwest Territories due to the heavy wildfire smoke.
