Ford government set to announce legislation banning speed cameras

TORONTO: The Ford government may introduce legislation this fall to eliminate speed cameras across Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria are expected to release more details at a press conference at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Dozens of speed cameras have been destroyed in Toronto over the last six months. This has led to a disagreement between Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. Ford has said that the cameras are merely a form of “tax collection” and that he would intervene to remove them if municipalities were unwilling to do so. Meanwhile, Mayor Olivia Chow stated that the cameras help to reduce speeding and thus save lives.

Jess Spiker, an activist with the Friends and Families organization, said he believes that through this legislation, the Premier is rewarding vandals. Spiker also criticized the move, stating that instead of catching the criminals who are destroying the cameras, the wrong actions are being taken.
