Finance Minister announces 100-day plan to fix CRA service delays

OTTAWA – Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has demanded that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) resolve issues such as delays and service interruptions within 100 days. In a letter to the chair of the parliamentary finance committee, Champagne said the CRA’s operations were not efficient amid complaints about delays at the agency’s call centers. He also stated that he has asked the CRA to take concrete steps to resolve these issues.

The minister’s letter comes as the Liberal government plans widespread spending cuts in the coming years. Champagne stated that he and other tax agency officials would appear before the finance committee to inform Members of Parliament about the actions needed to improve the CRA’s efficiency.

Meanwhile, the Union of Taxation Employees says that more than 3,000 employees have been laid off from the CRA since May of last year and that further layoffs would worsen the Canada Revenue Agency’s service.
