Federal Government Announces $1.2 Million Funding to Combat Drug Crisis in Ottawa Through New Pilot Project

OTTAWA: In a significant effort to address the escalating toxic drug crisis, the federal government has announced a nearly $1.2 million funding package for the City of Ottawa. The announcement follows high-level discussions between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, marking a collaborative step toward public safety and community health. A major portion of this funding, approximately $500,000 provided through Public Safety Canada, will be used to launch the “Safe Space Pilot Project,” a specialized initiative designed to engage vulnerable individuals in creative and productive activities.

The Safe Space Pilot Project aims to redirect individuals struggling with substance use away from street engagement and toward life-skills training through structured, low-barrier programs in art, sports, and music. This funding will be distributed among six key community organizations, including the Ottawa Paramedic Service, Shepherds of Good Hope, Operation Come Home, and Centretown Community Health Centre, among others. General Manager of Community and Social Services, Clara Freire, emphasized that the complexity of the drug crisis requires a unified response across all levels of government, noting that these programs will help reduce pressure on public spaces and over-capacity day services.

In the second phase of the initiative, Health Canada will provide $650,000 to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA). This investment is dedicated to researching current local conditions and developing a comprehensive action plan for addiction recovery over the next year. The federal government intends to use this project as a blueprint to be replicated in other major Canadian cities. By combining social support with skill development, the city and federal authorities aim to find a sustainable solution to the drug crisis while enhancing overall urban safety in the nation’s capital.
