Family doctor waitlist drops by more than 1,500 in July, says NS Health

HALIFAX: Nova Scotia Health has reported a decrease in the number of people in need of a family doctor. According to the latest figures, the number of individuals requiring a family physician in the province dropped by 1,500 last month.

As of August 1, over 87,879 people were registered on the “Need a Family Practice” registry, compared to 89,455 in July. This represents a decrease of 1,576 individuals in one month.

Nova Scotia Health attributes this reduction to people successfully finding another doctor. However, it is noted that 8.3 percent of the province’s population is still actively searching for a family doctor.

In recent years, the shortage of family doctors has been a significant health concern in Nova Scotia. This new report suggests progress is being made in addressing the crisis, although efforts must continue to ensure every resident has access to a family physician.
