VANCOUVER: The evacuation order issued following a train derailment in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia has been rescinded. Local authorities had initially asked residents of a village near Cranbrook to leave the area after the incident.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has now permitted residents to return to their homes, determining that the accident no longer poses a threat to the public. Additionally, the local state of emergency has been cancelled.
The accident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on Saturday in the Regional District of East Kootenay, about 16 kilometers from Cranbrook. Around 12 cars of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) train derailed. The cars contained wood products and a propane tanker.
No injuries were reported in the accident. The evacuation order was issued as a “precautionary measure” due to a lack of immediate information, according to Christina Carbre, Director of the District Emergency Operations Centre.
Officials from the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada continue to investigate the incident.
