KITCHENER — Environment Canada has issued a yellow alert for the Region of Waterloo, warning residents of significant snowfall and high-velocity winds expected to hit the area on Monday. According to the weather agency, strong westerly winds with gusts ranging between 60 and 80 km/h are anticipated, which could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility on the roads. Accompanying the wind is a drastic drop in temperature, with wind chill values expected to reach between -20°C and -25°C, posing a risk of frostbite and hypothermia for those outdoors.
The weather agency has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the Monday afternoon and evening commutes, as visibility may be suddenly reduced due to heavy flurries and blowing snow. While the bitter cold is expected to persist for much of the week, a brief reprieve is forecasted for Wednesday, when temperatures may rise toward the zero-degree mark. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and to dress in layered, insulated clothing if they must travel outdoors during this period of extreme winter weather.
