E-scooter injuries on the rise across Canada, data shows

OTTAWA – A new report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) indicates a significant increase in electric scooter (e-scooter) accidents across Canada. The report highlights that children, teenagers, and women are disproportionately affected by injuries from e-scooter incidents.

According to figures released on Thursday, hospital admissions related to e-scooter accidents among children and youth aged 5 to 17 saw a 61% increase between 2022 and 2024. During the same period, injuries among women surged by 60%, while hospital admissions for men aged 18 to 64 increased by 22%. The report further notes that the majority of e-scooter-related accidents occurred in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Dr. Daniel Rosenfield, an emergency physician at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, attributes the rise in injuries to the growing popularity and affordability of e-scooters, coupled with a lack of public information regarding potential hazards.
