‘Did Anyone Have a Bourbon?’: Mark Carney Mocks Trump Policies with Sharp Wit

MONTREAL – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took a sharp, satirical aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies during a Liberal Party convention in Montreal. Amidst a climate of escalating trade friction, Carney lauded Canadians for their “acts of solidarity” in boycotting American goods and opting for domestic alternatives. He famously quipped, “Has anyone had a bourbon lately?”—a remark that drew heavy laughter and highlighted the growing trend of Canadians rejecting iconic U.S. spirits in favor of local products.

The Prime Minister emphasized a strategic shift away from over-reliance on the United States, particularly in defense spending. Carney told delegates that the era where 70 cents of every dollar spent by the Canadian military flowed into the U.S. economy is coming to an end. This rhetoric follows a period of strained relations sparked by the Trump administration’s high tariffs on Canadian exports and the President’s controversial description of Canada as the “51st state” of the U.S.

Looking forward, Carney reinforced the government’s commitment to the “Buy Canadian” initiative, aimed at reducing vulnerability to foreign market shifts. He outlined an ambitious plan to double exports to non-U.S. markets over the next decade. Carney stated that the government’s priority remains the unity and common good of the nation, signaling that Canada is prepared to prioritize long-term economic independence over short-term diplomatic convenience.
