CSIS Reports Indian Interference in Conservative Leadership Race Supporting Pierre Poilievre

Ottawa : The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has disclosed attempts by Indian agents to interfere in the 2022 Conservative Party leadership race. According to reports, these efforts involved mobilizing support within the South Asian community for Pierre Poilievre, who emerged as the Conservative Party leader.

While CSIS confirmed the interference attempts, the agency noted that they were not extensive or highly coordinated. Importantly, there is no evidence suggesting that Poilievre or senior members of the Conservative Party were aware of these actions.

In response to these allegations, Poilievre has refused to obtain the necessary security clearance that would allow him access to classified information on foreign interference. He defended his decision, arguing that accepting a clearance would limit his ability to hold the Liberal government accountable on the matter.

“I don’t need a security clearance to demand transparency and honesty from this government,” Poilievre remarked.

Despite his refusal, CSIS has expressed its willingness to provide relevant information on foreign interference through alternative channels, ensuring that key political leaders are informed without breaching sensitive protocols.

The revelations add to growing concerns over foreign influence in Canadian politics, with lawmakers from all sides urging for stronger safeguards against external manipulation. The issue is expected to remain a focal point as the country approaches its next federal election.
