Colorado Low: Toronto Braces for Heavy Rainfall on Saturday

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Toronto and several parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as a significant weather system, known as a Colorado Low, moves into the region. The federal weather agency predicts that the area could receive between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain throughout Saturday, with some localized areas potentially seeing even higher amounts if thunderstorms develop.

The weather system is expected to bring intermittent periods of rain during the daylight hours, but meteorologists warn that the most intense downpours will likely occur Saturday evening and persist through the night. The agency noted that while the rain may start light, it will intensify as the low-pressure system matures over Southern Ontario, potentially accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

Public safety officials have advised residents to be cautious of localized flooding, as the ground may have limited ability to absorb the sudden influx of water. Motorists are being urged to exercise extra care on the roads, as heavy rain and ponding in low-lying areas can lead to suddenly reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions.

In addition to the rain, the system is expected to bring shifting temperatures and gusty winds. Environment Canada recommends that residents stay updated on further alerts and avoid low-lying areas or riverbanks where water levels could rise quickly. Conditions are expected to stabilize by Sunday as the system moves out of the province.
