OTTAWA: Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to hold a meeting with US President Donald Trump tomorrow, Friday, in Washington, D.C., following a trade spat triggered by an anti-tariff advertisement from the Ontario government. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that this brief meeting will take place at the John F. Kennedy Center.
Carney, who is visiting Washington to attend the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is also scheduled to meet separately with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The three leaders are in the capital primarily for the World Cup draw, which will determine the tournament’s composition. However, the Prime Minister’s Office has not confirmed whether the stalled trade negotiations will be formally revived during the visit.
This marks Carney’s first trip to the United States since the trade discussions broke down in October. President Trump abruptly terminated trade talks with Canada last month, taking exception to an anti-tariff advertisement produced by the Ontario government. The controversial ad, which aired in the U.S. during the World Series, used remarks from former US President Ronald Reagan to criticize the economic harms of tariffs. Prime Minister Carney has since apologized for the ad and stated that Canada is ready to restart negotiations, but the U.S. ambassador to Canada has expressed doubt that a comprehensive trade deal will be reached before the new year.
