Carney Strikes Back: Canada Slaps $35B in Tariffs on U.S. Imports Amid Trade War Escalation

Ottawa : Carney Unveils Bold Counter-Tariff Plan to Shield Canadian Economy. Prime Minister Mark Carney has taken a decisive stand against U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating trade war, announcing a robust counter-tariff strategy on April 3, 2025. In a press conference on Parliament Hill, Carney revealed plans to impose 25% tariffs on U.S. vehicles not compliant with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), targeting roughly $35 billion worth of American imports. This move, dubbed a “purposeful and forceful” response, aims to protect Canadian industries—particularly the auto sector—hit hard by Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, which took effect earlier this week. Carney emphasized that the revenue, estimated at $8 billion, will be reinvested into support programs for affected workers and businesses, signaling a shift toward economic resilience. Analysts see this as a political win for Carney, whose Liberals have surged ahead in polls during the federal election campaign, set to conclude on April 28. However, critics warn that rising costs for Canadian consumers could temper the optimism.
