Carney Government Freezes Trudeau’s Environmental Policies

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government has frozen key environmental policies of the former Justin Trudeau administration, with plans to re-evaluate the target for increasing electric vehicles by 2026 and the Clean Fuel Regulations. The Carney government has pointed to rising unemployment and the impact of U.S. tariffs on the Canadian economy as the main reasons for these changes. The new move comes just months after the government lowered the carbon tax in March.

Meanwhile, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly did not comment on whether the emission reduction targets for 2030 and 2035 would be maintained. However, she affirmed that the government remains committed to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Joly added that these actions are a response to U.S. tariffs and are not politically motivated.
