Vancouver: Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will increase its defense spending to rebuild its defense sector and boost its military capabilities. He made the statement during a visit to the Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges (CFMETR) on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Canada will spend up to $150 billion to meet NATO’s defense spending targets. Carney also visited the Canadian Navy ship, Sikanni.
The Prime Minister’s visit comes amid protests led by the ‘Freedom From War Coalition,’ which has been demanding that the government focus on public housing and education instead of military spending. Protesters also raised questions about arms shipments to Israel. While the government maintains that it is not exporting lethal weapons, reports indicate that military equipment from Canada is reaching Israel.
