Ottawa: A new survey report indicates that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney continues to enjoy strong public support. The results of an opinion poll conducted by Abacus Data show that his public support has not waned, even after a failure to reach a trade agreement with the United States earlier this month. The survey was conducted from July 31 to August 7 and included 1,686 Canadian citizens.
The survey results indicate that 44% of Canadian citizens are concerned about U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. However, 62% of people pointed to the rising cost of living as the country’s biggest problem. The country’s economy was ranked as the third most important problem by 37% of respondents. A significant 75% of those surveyed expressed an unfavorable attitude toward Trump. Additionally, 58% believe that the Liberal Party is the strongest party to deal with the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, the survey results suggest a decline in the popularity of the Carney government, with only 50% of people supporting the government. This is a two percent decrease from mid-July figures and the lowest approval rating since last March. While one in four people want a change in the federal government, a third of the population has no clear alternative. If an election were held now, 43% of respondents said they would vote for the Liberals.
While Mark Carney continues to have 48% public support, Pierre Poilievre received 42% favorable votes and 41% unfavorable votes.
