Canadian Steel Group Urges Plan to Counter US Tariffs

OTTAWA — The Canadian steel industry is calling on the government to establish a robust strategy to mitigate the impact of ongoing trade measures imposed by the United States on Canadian steel and aluminum exports.

Keinan Loomis, CEO of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), emphasized the urgent need for decisive action in a recent statement.

“We need to stand strong against the US and have a plan ready to counter their trade actions,” Loomis stated. While acknowledging the importance of striving to retain US market access, he added that there needs to be a fundamental shift toward focusing attention on the domestic market.

Loomis confirmed that the impact of the US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum is already being felt across the industry. He noted that Canadian steel producers are currently doing their utmost to avoid resorting to layoffs.

While Canada maintains aluminum markets in both Europe and Asia, the majority of its production is traditionally exported to the US. The report notes that the US currently levies a 50% tariff on aluminum and steel imports originating from Canada. The industry is seeking clarity and a government-led approach to navigate these significant financial barriers.
