MILAN (AP) — The Canadian Olympic Committee has expressed profound grief and shock following a horrific shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia that left ten people dead. Issuing an official statement from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics venue, Team Canada extended its deepest sympathies to the families who lost loved ones, the injured, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community. The committee emphasized that the entire Olympic team stands in solidarity with those affected, wishing them the strength to navigate through this incredibly difficult tragedy.

The violence broke out on Tuesday, February 10, around 1:20 p.m. local time, at the secondary school located in northeastern British Columbia. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers discovered six victims inside the school, while a seventh person succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital. Two additional victims were found at a nearby residence believed to be linked to the incident. Authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter, identified by some reports as an 18-year-old female, also died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In addition to the fatalities, more than 25 people sustained injuries, with two victims remaining in critical condition after being airlifted to a specialized hospital. The shooting has sent shockwaves across Canada, occurring in a remote town of just 2,400 people. Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia Premier David Eby have both released statements mourning the “senseless violence” and praising the rapid response of first responders who reached the school within minutes to prevent further loss of life.
