Canada’s Autumn Expected to Be Longer Than Usual

OTTAWA – Meteorologists are predicting that autumn will be longer than usual across Canada this year. After a summer of intense heat in many parts of the country, Canadians will have to wait a little longer before they need to put on their winter jackets, says David Phillips, a senior climatologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Phillips clarified that this does not mean there will be extreme heat, but rather higher-than-normal temperatures. For cities like Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, and Yellowknife, temperatures in October and November will be warmer than what is typically experienced.

He added that the return of La Niña in the Pacific is often associated with colder temperatures, which could potentially lead to an earlier start to the winter season. Even with the warmer fall, Phillips noted that Canadians can still expect some light snowfall, as is common for the season, but should not anticipate large amounts of snow in mid-October.
