Ottawa: The Liberal government of Canada is set to introduce new legislation today aimed at making it more difficult to obtain bail for individuals accused of violent crimes. The bill, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, is designed to significantly toughen the bail process for violent and organized criminal offenses.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser is scheduled to share the details of the bill with the media this afternoon. The government frames this initiative as a critical measure to enhance and ensure public safety.
The proposed legislation includes the implementation of a ‘reverse onus’ provision for certain specific crimes. This change will require the accused to prove why they should be released on bail, rather than the Crown having to prove why they should be detained. Furthermore, the bill aims to enforce ‘Consecutive Sentences’ to prevent repeat violent offenders from serving multiple terms of imprisonment concurrently.
However, Conservative leader Larry Brock has criticized the legislation, dismissing it as a ‘half-baked copy’ of their party’s own proposed bill.
