OTTAWA: On the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced $2 billion in military and financial assistance for Ukraine. Highlighting Canada’s unwavering commitment to Kyiv, the Prime Minister also declared a new wave of sanctions as the conflict enters its fifth year.
The latest sanctions specifically target 100 vessels belonging to the Russian “shadow fleet,” which are used to bypass international trade restrictions and price caps on oil. During his address, Prime Minister Carney emphasized that Russia is failing to achieve its military, strategic, and economic objectives, reaffirming that Canada will support Ukraine “for the long haul.”
Further tightening the pressure on Moscow, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced additional sanctions against Russian individuals and entities involved in targeting Ukraine’s power grid. These measures are a direct response to attacks on critical civilian infrastructure during the harsh winter months.
