BERLIN – Canada is set to acquire new submarines from both Germany and South Korea, as confirmed by Prime Minister Mark Carney during his recent European tour. Carney’s visit included a stop at the German Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) shipyard, solidifying the two nations as key suppliers for the acquisition.
The new submarines are expected to be purchased from a German-Norwegian consortium, TKMS, and from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean Company Ltd. As part of the procurement process, Prime Minister Carney is scheduled to visit Hanwha’s facilities in South Korea in October.
During a joint press conference in Berlin with German Chancellor Frederik Mercin, Carney highlighted the advanced capabilities of the prospective fleet. He stated that the new submarines will be able to spend weeks submerged under sea ice and operate effectively in both the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, which are strategically vital for Canada.
