OTTAWA: Canada is prepared to deploy troops to Ukraine, with government officials not ruling out the move even if a ceasefire is reached with Russia. The statement was made ahead of Prime Minister Marc Carney’s visit to Kyiv to participate in Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations.
A government spokesperson stated that the “Coalition of the Willing,” a group of 30 countries, is discussing future security guarantees for Ukraine once the war ends. Prime Minister Marc Carney emphasized that Ukraine needs a strong military and that weapons and training are necessary to achieve this. In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump had previously stated that the U.S. would not send troops to Ukraine.
Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff is participating in the discussions on security guarantees. Officials also noted that Canada is Ukraine’s biggest supporter outside of Europe. Following his trip to Ukraine, Carney will meet with leaders in Poland, Germany, and Latvia as part of his European tour.
