OTTAWA: The federal government is reconsidering the import duties imposed on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in Canada. Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald has indicated that the government is considering lifting the tariffs. He added that discussions with China are progressing, and a decision will be made after considering the potential repercussions in other sectors.
EV sales in Canada have recently declined, while the sale of hybrid vehicles has increased. In this context, experts believe that the entry of lower-priced Chinese vehicles into the market could help boost the growth of electric vehicles. However, there are warnings that this move could negatively affect the Canadian auto industry.
Meanwhile, a survey conducted by Nanos Research found that 62% of Canadian citizens support this move. They hope that it will lead to the removal of taxes imposed by China on Canadian crops such as canola.
