Canada and Germany Forge Partnership to Bolster Critical Mineral Supply Chains

BERLIN – Canada and Germany have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen critical mineral supply chains, aiming to reduce their reliance on dominant global suppliers like China and Russia.

During a visit to Germany, Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that while China and Russia hold significant control over the global critical minerals market, Canadian resources such as nickel and cobalt have long remained underdeveloped.

At a joint press conference with German Chancellor Frederik Mercin, Carney highlighted Germany as a crucial European partner for diversifying supply chains. He stated that Canada can play a key role in accelerating this diversification for both Germany and the wider European market.

The Prime Minister added that the two nations also plan to cooperate closely on energy, including in the areas of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen.

To support the export of these energy and mineral products, Carney mentioned planned port upgrades in Montreal and Churchill. To advance the new partnership, both countries have appointed senior officials to serve as special representatives.
