Calgary launches ‘Lights Out’ campaign to save birds

CALGARY: As the number of birds dying from window collisions in the province increases, bird conservation organizations in Calgary are urging people to turn off their lights early at night. The “Lights Out” campaign, initiated a week ago by the Calgary Urban Species Response Team (CUSRT), aims to address the issue. Authorities state that the lights from buildings at night affect birds’ vision, leading to these accidents.

In the first 12 days of this month alone, 106 birds were found dead. This number is higher than the total number of bird deaths discovered throughout the entire year of 2019.

The campaign’s objectives are to encourage people to turn off lights in buildings from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., ensure a safe migratory path for birds, and bring the issue of bird mortality to the attention of city residents.
