British Columbia launches heat pump rebate program

Vancouver: The British Columbia government has launched a new heat pump incentive program for eligible building owners and renters. This initiative, aimed at reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills, will provide income-qualified residents living in multi-unit residential buildings with up to $5,000, as announced by the provincial Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions.

The government states that this program will help combat climate change, reduce electricity usage, and enable residents of apartments and condos to maintain cooler temperatures during hot weather. The rebate program is being rolled out in two phases. The first phase commenced on July 15, while the second phase is set to begin in the fall of 2025, according to the Ministry.

During the initial phase, the rebate program will be available to owners of condos and apartment buildings up to six storeys high that currently use electric heating. By the fall, the program will expand to include buildings heated by fossil fuels, such as gas-fired boilers. To receive rebates for their suites, residents must obtain permission from their landlords or strata corporations.
