WINNIPEG – Dozens of schools across Manitoba have been ordered to close today as the province grapples with a powerful combination of heavy snowfall and high winds. Following a blizzard that struck on Thursday, the region is now being battered by a weather system known as an “Alberta Clipper.”
Environment Canada has issued warnings for several regions, including Yellowhead, where snowfall totals are expected to reach up to 15 cm. The situation is further complicated by wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, which have created “whiteout” conditions on many highways.
Authorities warned that the blowing snow has severely reduced visibility, making travel extremely hazardous for both commuters and school buses.
In response to the deteriorating conditions, more than ten school divisions have cancelled all classes for the day. Impacted divisions include:
- Hanover
- Interlake
- Sunrise
In some other divisions, schools officially remain open, but bus services have been suspended due to the dangerous road conditions. Parents are advised to check their local school board websites for specific updates.
The Manitoba RCMP has urged residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. “The combination of icy surfaces and near-zero visibility is a recipe for serious accidents,” officials stated.
In addition to transportation disruptions, authorities are warning of potential power outages caused by the heavy snow and wind. Residents are encouraged to keep emergency kits ready and exercise extreme caution until the storm passes.
