Allison Townsend Returns to N.B. Cabinet as Minister of Labour

Fredericton — New Brunswick Minister Allison Townsend is officially returning to her government duties with a new portfolio, stepping into the role of Minister of Labour. The appointment, announced by Premier Susan Holt’s office, is effective immediately.

The announcement marks a significant return for Townsend, who had been on medical leave since February of this year after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. The MLA for Rothesay had previously served as the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training, and Labour.

Townsend’s leave in February was prompted by her diagnosis, which she publicly shared as a “stark reminder about the importance of cancer screening.” She underwent surgery and treatment, expressing hope for a “speedy recovery” and a swift return to serving the people of New Brunswick.

While Townsend was on leave, her duties were temporarily handled by Jean-Claude D’Amours, who served as acting minister. D’Amours will continue in his role as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Townsend was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 2024 general election, where she unseated a long-time incumbent. Her new appointment as Minister of Labour reflects a reshuffling of responsibilities within Premier Holt’s cabinet as the government continues to move forward.

The premier and her cabinet have expressed their full support for Townsend throughout her health journey and have welcomed her return to the cabinet table.
